Sonu Nigam: One of The Most Experimental Singers of Our Industry

Sonu Nigam is one of the most versatile and experimental singers the Bollywood industry has. Different genre, sound, language, and music -he has tried all of that.

Sonu’s father, Agam Kumar Nigam used to perform in stage shows. Little Sonu used to accompany his father to his shows and his interest in music grew from there. He is one of the highest paid singers.

“He began his singing at the age of four when he joined his father on the stage to sing ‘Kya hua tera wada'”

A singer’s speciality is accent. To sing in different languages is easy, but to grab that accent for an original feel is a challenge that very few can handle.

Sonu Nigam has recorded songs in more than 15 languages.

These include Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Malyalam, Odia, Tulu, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Chattisgarhi, Assamese, Nepali, Maithili and various other languages.

Sonu Nigam was the first choice of R.D. Burman for the song ‘Ek ladki ko dekha’.

Sonu Nigam was supposed to playback the song “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh” from 1942 A Love Story and he was the first choice of RD Burman for this song but later this song was recorded by Kumar Sanu.

Sonu has sung the title song of Tees Maar Khan in 54 different voices including the voice for Akshay Kumar.

That line from Akshay in the song which says ‘Catch me if you can, chase me and I run faster than I can’ was actually the voice of Sonu Nigam. He did it so well that Farah could not recognize it.

Nigam has performed in countries in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia.

In 2011, he collaborated with Britney Spears on a remix of her “I Wanna Go” track, and with DJ Avicii on his song “Indian Levels” produced by Avicii in 2012.

All types of his songs have a special place in our hearts. Romantic, emotional, party, or classical, his voice brings up the mood which merges with the music.

Top 10 of my favorite songs of him:

1. Kal ho na ho

2. Abhi Mujh Mein Kahi

3. Tanhaai

4. Main Agar Kahoon

5. Satarangi Re

6. Shukran Allah

7. Saathiya

8. Tu Jahan Main Wahan

9. Tumse Milke

10. Sapna Jahan

Which is your favorite song of him?

  1. I love Sonu Nigam, kal ho na ho makes me cry every single time. I think he was Arjit Singh of 90s and 2000s. 😛 Singers in our country don’t get enough recognition for their immense talent like in west. Our so called actors earn in millions by using their pretty faces, but singers are not appreciated enough. Sonu is one of them. Nice post.

    1. Thanks a lot! And yes I agree to what you said. Indian singers especially before EDM had real knowledge of music and singing ability.. they should be encouraged to continue and this can be done when they get enough appreciation like western singers.
